Diagnostic Ultrasound

Each diagnostic ultrasound examination is performed by a specialty trained and licensed Ultrasound Technologist. The technologist uses a tool known as an ultrasound transducer/probe, which is placed on your skin to create images using sound waves, in a process similar to radar or sonar. Sometimes, for a more accurate evaluation, a probe can be placed inside the body. The medical images that are created during the exam are then interpreted by one of our highly trained board-certified radiologists. The images produced during an ultrasound exam provide information that is valuable in diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases and conditions.

A diagnostic ultrasound is commonly used to evaluate:

  • The breast and axilla
  • The fetus during pregnancy
  • The thyroid gland
  • Abdominal organs (ex. gallbladder, liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys)
  • Pelvic organs (ex. uterus, ovaries)
  • The testicles, scrotum and prostate
  • Arteries and veins

What You Can Expect

An ultrasound is usually a painless procedure that takes 15-30 minutes. Some people will occasionally experience mild discomfort during the examination. If this happens, our technologists will adjust their technique to make the exam as comfortable as possible. Our goal is to provide you the highest level of quality medical care in the most relaxing environment.
